The genuine doctrine of Mahdism is underpinned by a robust and historically established foundation, with a history that extends for approximately 1400 years. However, throughout the course of Islamic history, a considerable number of Muslims have strayed from the authentic path due to the influence of various divergent sects. One notable group is the Waqifiya, comprising Shi‘a adherents of Imam Musa al-Kazim (peace be upon him), who, following his martyrdom, accepted the assertions made by some of his former representatives concerning his Mahdism and leadership, thereby submitting to their dominion. In light of these divergent movements, scholars from the Imami school have produced a multitude of writings to defend Shi‘a doctrines and to counter the challenges presented, thus facilitating the guidance of many individuals who were in a state of confusion. Among these scholars, Shaykh Tusi is particularly distinguished for his considerable contributions in this regard. In various sections of his writings, he has elucidated the errors of movements claiming Mahdism.
Considering the historical recurrence and dissemination of such uncertainties through various periods, an understanding of his method of addressing these questions may function as a relevant framework in the modern context. This research seeks to explore Shaykh Tusi’s strategy for responding to the uncertainties posed by the Waqifiya movement, employing library resources and a descriptive-analytical approach.
The results reveal that Shaykh Tusi implemented a multifaceted strategy that resonates with the persuasive nature of the Qur’anic verse 125 from Surah al-Nahl. His methodology incorporates three fundamental components within the sphere of religious convictions:
Accepted principles (appealing to commonly acknowledged foundations), Empirical evidence (referencing tangible and historical proofs), and Established doctrines (relying on religious beliefs agreed upon by consensus).
